Comparable to New England in the fall is Lucas County in the spring when the red bud trees are blooming and breathtaking. Mid-April is the best time to experience this scenic wonder. Below is a suggested schedule; however, we will customize a tour especially for you that will include ample opportunities for photography from a variety of locations, birdwatching, and shopping.
10:30 a.m. – Arrive at Red Haw State Park on Highway 34 east of Chariton to see the many red bud trees in bloom. A step on guide will accompany your group as it drives through the park and makes its stops for photography.
12:00 Lunch at an Amish farm and a tour of Shady Lane Country Store.
Afternoon activities will be customized to your group’s interests. These could include a shopping tour around the town square, a visit to the historical museum, visits to pioneer cemeteries, farm visits, quilt shop hop, or many of the other offerings Lucas County has to satisfy special interests.
We particularly recommend as an afternoon activity a tour of Piper’s Candy – see how they make their famous candy and taste why it is a favorite of their customers found throughout the United States.
Tour costs are dependent upon the size of your group and your customized package. Please call 641-774-4059 and ask for Tourism Lucas County’s tour coordinator who will work with you to arrange for a tour that meets all of your group’s needs. You can also fax your requests to 641-774-2801.
