Lucas – The John L. Lewis Memorial Museum of Mining & Labor

Jct. US Hwy 34 and 65 South
The eight sections of this Museum tell the story of coal mining days and of John L Lewis, who began his mining days at the Big Hill Mine in Lucas as a mule driver and eventually rose to power and the Presidency of the United Mine Workers of America. Learn all about Lewis and the coal mining days in the separate areas of labor, mining, theater, library, souvenirs, memorial, Old Lucas, and other areas.
Hours: Open April 15 to October 15 , Monday – Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Closed Sundays and holidays. Group tours by appointment year around. Phone/Fax: 641-766-6831.


Lucas County Historical Society

Located at 123 N. 17th St. in west Chariton, Iowa, the museum now is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visits may be arranged at other times depending upon availability of staff. You may telephone us at (641) 774-4464 or e-mail us at lchs@iowatelecom.net.
