Genealogical Indexes Preserve The Past

There are many locations in Lucas County to trace family ties. The Lucas County Genealogical Society at the Chariton Public Library, the Family History & Genealogy Room at the Russell Museum and Lucas County Museum are all home to an excellent collection of genealogy information.

The most extensive collection, recognized nationwide, is maintained in the Laura Curtis Family History Room on the lower level of the Chariton Public Library. The genealogy collection pertains not only to family history, but to local, state and national history and statistics as well. A lot of the information is in print with an every name index. The Chariton and Russell Newspapers are made available on microfilm and have been partly indexed from 1867 to 2005. .

Lucas County Genealogical Society Volunteers are available to assist patrons in utilizing the collection most afternoons, and are often available by appointment or request during the week. Requests for assistance and information can be phoned or faxed using the Library’s contact numbers, or mailed c/o the Library, or emailed to: lucasgene@hotmail.com
