Spotlight On: First United Methodist Church
The Pilcher pipe organ paid for, in part, by Andrew Carnegie.
When Rev. E.L. Briggs arrived in Chariton in the fall of 1851 to start the Methodist Episcopal Church (1851-1865), the community was but a village of few homes and shops in a wild prairie country. Upon its founding, there were eight members. Today, the First United Methodist Church is home to nearly 500 members.
Visitors drawn to the Church will have the opportunity to experience a variety of attractions. The Pilcher pipe organ is of particular pride, not only for the pleasure of listening to the orchestral sounds, but also because half of its $6,000 cost in January of 1906 was contributed by Andrew Carnegie.
The hallways leading to classrooms are painted with happy murals that elicit smiles from visitors of all ages. The elegance of the church is much enhanced when sunlight shines through the many stained glass windows.
Tours of the church can be arranged by calling Rev. Allen Wiese at 774-5023, or by attending Sunday services at 10:00 a.m. The church is located at 923 Roland Avenue, in Chariton.
